SPACE PODS!

INTERGENERATIONAL HOUSING 2021

SPACE PODS captures the imagination of generations and is sustainable for those still to come. Inspired by the 1950s view of Kitchener’s future, a space-age design was developed, based on the idea of compartmentalized SPACE PODS, which can slide into any of the post-war towers littered across Ontario.

Each pod is self-sustaining and sits within a semi-regulated space to minimize the need for heating and cooling throughout the year. The nature of this “Outdoors” space draws people out of their pods and into an alien world of exotic plants such as Birds of Paradise, Orchids and Cacti, where they can informally interact with their neighbours.

SPACE PODS offers accommodation for a cross-section of generations, including students, families and the elderly, representing humanity’s eternal interest in space and the future. The building also offers a short term rental unit for guests or otherwise curious people who want to experience space-age living.

SUSTAINABILITY

SPACE PODS reimagines the generic post-war Alexandrian tower. The highly thermally efficient and lightweight construction techniques of the aerospace industry inspired the design of the individual pods. Moreover, this pod design prevents the stack effect within the units.

The insulated nature of the individual capsules also allows for less heating and cooling loads in the public amenities. Therefore, public areas are semi-regulated with automatic operable windows allowing for an “outdoor” feel.

Most of all, SPACE PODS aims to inspire and connect generations. Opening a dialogue between people will expose people to the pressing issues of different demographics, bringing humanity together to reach collective goals. SPACE PODS fosters sustainable relationships for the future through our collective curiosity of the space age.
